David Ly

David Ly was born to his father Ly Hung Lim and mother Kung Song Keng on April 22nd, 1951 in Cambodia. He grew up with his seven brothers and sisters in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. When David turned 22, he immigrated to the United States, escaping the Cambodian Civil War and in search of a better future. He arrived in Los Angeles and worked several jobs in the city. David always loved to tell the story of how he was a bartender at a famous Chinese restaurant in LA and had the opportunity to serve Bruce Lee. After several years in the restaurant business, he eventually found his long term career in auto sales. David worked for several different companies—Volkswagen, Ford, Mercedes, BMW to name a few. He spent his first few years as a salesperson and it was then that he met Julia, his first wife. After being together for a few years, their son Ben was born in 1983. David and Julia divorced shortly after, while Ben spent most of his time growing up with his dad living in Alta Loma, CA. David’s career continued to flourish in auto sales, as he was promoted into management. While being a salesperson was David’s trade, managing people and helping them grow truly made him tick. He worked for several years managing auto dealerships and made long-lasting relationships with the people he encountered. In November of 1989, David married Jennie and their son Jonathon was born in April of 1992. As a family, they would often take road trips through California together and host BBQs at their home in Alta Loma. Besides sales, David’s true passion was cooking for others—he would find a dish in a restaurant and make it his goal to “make it better” from scratch at home. Over the years, some of his favorite dishes to cook were hot and sour soup, clam pasta, and his famous Vietnamese style lobster. In 2004, David, Jennie & Jonathon moved to Newcastle, WA where David continued his career with BMW. They resided in Newcastle and later on Fox Island. Jennie, David’s wife of almost 28 years, passed away in July of 2017. David retired shortly after and moved to Clovis with his son Jonathon towards the end of 2018. David passed away on January 3rd, 2019 in Clovis, CA after a tenacious fight against cancer. David Ly is survived by his sons Ben and Jonathon, his daughter-in-law Karissa, his brother Robert, his sister Kwain, nieces Tukta, Fon, Mong, and his grandsons Cameron and Bennett. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandpa who will be dearly missed by all.
